Students in the pottery workshop have the opportunity to experience a wide range of hand-building techniques, at times progressing to thrown work on the electric wheel.
Many different products are made, such as tableware, garden pots and decorative, seasonal items.
Each project starts with a choice of clay bodies through the selection of glazes and decorating techniques to firing and the eventual exhibition, household use or sale of the pieces.
Working with clay allows students to engage with mineral nature, integrating science, craft and art.
Working with clay can strengthen a student’s physical condition and improve stamina. Exploring decorating techniques and colours calls for decisions to be made and concepts to be translated into practical application. Through commissions and specific orders, an understanding of social responsibility and some basic pricing awareness can be practised.
