Craft Curriculum

Our Craft Curriculum is central to our therapeutic learning. The craft activities are valued for both their therapeutic potential and also for developing transferable skills.  The development of skills within a craft support a sensory based experience whilst building each individual’s confidence and self-esteem by making beautiful, valued items that are used within the community or sold as social enterprise.

The craft workshops on offer are Introduction to Crafts, Weavery, Pottery, Cookery, Garden, Bakery and Art. They will develop skills such as teamwork, time-keeping, health and safety awareness, communication, following instructions and perseverance.

Functional skills are embedded in all craft sessions.  Fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, strength as well as stamina are improved.

The Craft element develops students’ skills to enable potential voluntary or paid work opportunities beyond college.

Students are given the opportunity, if appropriate, to complete accredited qualifications and work towards their EHCP aims.

Introduction To Crafts

In the first year of college, students are introduced to a variety of crafts through practical work.  They will source clay, wool, willow and beeswax and then process and transform these materials into beautiful items, participating in clay work, felting, basketry and candle-dipping.

Students follow the seasons, working both outdoors and indoors accordingly and will gain an appreciation of the crafts, finding inspiration to participate in subsequent craft workshops at The Mount.

In addition to these crafts, College 1 students attend sessions in The Mount's other workshops (see below) which inform their decisions for their craft specialisms in College 2 and College 3.
